Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter

film-converterPreserving your favorite memories is always a good thing, and with the advent of digital cameras and computers, the film format looks to be entering its twilight years if it hasn't yet done so already. For those who want to transfer these sweet memories on film to a format that the next generation is more comfortable with, Hammacher has the perfect solution in the form of the Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter. This device is capable of converting old 35mm slides and film negatives into digital images, letting you do it yourself at home without the expensive "help" of a conversion service that most photo shops provide.

Not only does this help you free up space in your attic from those dusty photo boxes, you get to capture clear digital images without experiencing an loss in quality thanks to the 5 megapixel CMOS sensor. Each $99.95 purchase comes with a USB cable that plugs into a computer for both photo transfer and power functions. Just make sure you maintain a consistent backup for these digital archives lest a hard drive failure flushes your memory down the digital drain.

Look at the cord! It looks like its plugged into the stereo input jacks on that laptop. I thought this was a USB device! Strange…

Not only will this scanner not work with Vista, which they will tell you if you call their support number, but installation of the driver may damage your machine. I got the dreaded blue screen of death (shades of XP and Win98) and a dead computer that would not reboot. I was ready to do a full System Recovery (an HP Pavillion) which wipes and reformats the C: drive, when I remembered that the scanner was still plugged into the USB port. Removed the scanner, booted into safe mode, then a normal start, and now back in business. There are absolutely no warnings in the Hammacher Schlemmer, Brookstone or other ads that there is a Vista problem. Caveat Emptor. I know that some people are posting that a Vista driver is available, but VuPoint – the maker – clearly states that the device is XP only and will not work on a Vista machine.

I just called Hammacher, and they said that you must have an enhanced, or 2.0, USB port for this to work on your computer. I have a Dell Inspiron that is about 2.5 years old, and it does not have an enhanced port, so it will not work on my computer. Darn! Just thought I’d post this as a warning to others, because nowhere in the product description is this mentioned.

That’s the manufacturer’s link. They have only XP drivers, yet someone has a model of this with Vista drivers. $129 for that model, btw. Google for more info. Thinkgeeks, Hammacher, Brookstone all carry this model for $99 with XP drivers. Manual is avail on download from above site.

    Cheers

Can anyone name the actual mfg of this scanner/converter? HS is definitely remarketing this. None of their CS reps can answer any technical questions about it.
    Thanks, e

    Echo some earlier questions:
I work a lot with early aerial and space-based films, and I would like precision & consistency. Any comments are welcome on:
    1. DPI resolution?
    2. Color replication/consistency.
    3. Ability to handle 780-mm or 300-mm films?
    4. Color infrared films (Aerochrome 2443)
    5. Alternatives to this technology?

    Tks,

    Mike H.

I just called Hammacher Schlemmer, and they are not expecting a shipment of these until Dec. 12, and no guarantee of delivery in time for Christmas. Also, has anyone else used this? I’d really like to know if I should keep looking, or if this is a decent product. Thanks!!

is this only for 35mm negatives? I have a lot of old negatives that go back to the other size black and white film used years ago. I would like to put them in digital form.

Does anyone know if this device will allow 35mm roll microfilm to be threaded in so that a pic can be made of an individual frame?

I got it! It doesn’t work well!
The imported slides have not real colours.
The white colour is aggressive, it seems it use 256 colours not 16 million.
The software that you have to use is ArcSoftImpression 6 and it have not any setting to calibrate the imported slides
Please, don’t buy it … I spent a lot of money ($99,95 the scanner, $75 freight charges, …)

Hammacher advertises them but doesn’t have them. It is back-ordering to Dec. 7 when the “expect” a shipment. Anybody know who has them now?

I understand that the converter can only be used with a PC not an IMAC..Will this be avaiable for the Mac?
